Training For Health And Social Care Workers

We have a well established range of training courses for Health and Social Care workers providing training resources for employers wishing to ensure their care staff have access to first class training and development, so they can provide the best care possible for the wide range of adults in their care while meeting the increasingly demanding requirements of the Care Sector.

Our "Essential Training for Care Workers" training programme for all new care staff is designed to help employers meet the mandatory Common Induction Standards (CIS) requirements.

All our stand-alone courses, covering subjects such as:- Challenging Behaviour, Dementia Awareness, Diabetes Care, Infection Control, Loss and Bereavement, Safeguarding Adults, and Stroke Care also serve as preparation for, and link directly to, National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). Assertiveness for Care Workers

This training course will provide participants with the assertiveness skills and techniques needed by care workers in their day-to-day working environment.

This course is intended for all levels of staff, and no prior knowledge is assumed or required.

Course Duration: 1 day.

Autism Awareness

This training course will provide participants with a basic knowledge of autism and an awareness of the signs, symptoms, characteristics and causes of the condition. It will also provide an overview of the history of, and research into, autism and will seek to explain the myths surrounding it.

Dementia Awareness

Designed to meet the training requirements of National Care Standards, this training course will provide participants with a better understanding of dementia, enable them to perform their duties more confidently and effectively, and allow them to provide a better standard of care for people with dementia.

This course is intended for people working or living with individuals with dementia in residential, day care and domiciliary care, and no prior knowledge is assumed or required.

Dementia Care

This training course is an advanced course following on from our ½-day Dementia Awareness course. It will give participants a deep insight into living with dementia and caring for someone with dementia.

This course is intended for all levels of staff, and it is recommended that participants have attended the equivalent of our Dementia Awareness course.

This is a complete diabetes care training course aimed to provide workers in the care industry with all the information they require when caring for people with diabetes.

Equality and Diversity

Designed to meet the requirements of the Race Relations Act 1976, Sex Discrimination Act 1975, Equal Pay Act 1970, Disability Discrimination Act 1995, Human Rights Act 1998, Age Discrimination Act 2006, other appropriate legislation and National Care Standards, this training course will provide participants with an understanding of equality, diversity and discrimination issues in the workplace, and its legal context.

Essential Training for Care Workers

Skills for Care is the strategic development body for adult social care workers in England, and is responsible for setting the standards - the Common Induction Standards (CIS) - for people entering adult social care.

CIS were developed to meet the requirements of the General Social Care Council Code of Practice. Since October 2006 they have formed the national minimum standard requirements, specified by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), for all new care staff.

CIS form the basis for social care staff registration throughout England, and are required to be met within the 12-week induction period that employers must provide for all new care staff.

Fire Safety

Designed to meet the requirements of the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997, other appropriate legislation and National Care Standards, this training course will provide participants with the information needed to recognise fire hazards, respond safely to the occurrence of fire, communicate effectively with the Emergency Services, and quickly and safely evacuate a building.

Particular emphasis will be given to implementing the knowledge gained in the participant’s day-to-day working environment.

This course is intended for all levels of staff, and no prior knowledge is assumed or required.

(Emergency) First Aid

Designed to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, other appropriate legislation and National Care Standards, this training course will provide participants with the information needed to deal with accidents or the occurrence of sudden illness, and give them the basic knowledge of first aid procedures required to give immediate care whenever and wherever it is needed.

Particular emphasis will be given to administering first aid in the participant’s day-to-day working environment.

Participants will gain Appointed Person First Aid Certification valid for 3 years.

This course is intended for all levels of staff, and no prior knowledge is assumed or required.

First Aid

Food Hygiene Awareness

Designed to meet the requirements of the Food Safety Act 1990, The Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995, other appropriate legislation and National Care Standards, this training course will provide an understanding and awareness of a wide range of issues surrounding food hygiene and the need to achieve good standards of food safety and hygiene, together with a basic knowledge of the methods of preventing food poisoning and contamination.

This course is intended for all food handlers or anyone working in a role that involves contact with food, and no prior knowledge is assumed or required.

Health and Safety Awareness

Designed to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, other appropriate legislation and National Care Standards, this training course will provide participants with the information needed to ensure a safe working environment, by outlining the benefits and legal requirements of adopting effective health and safety measures in the workplace.

Participants will be made aware of potential risks in the workplace; their responsibilities, and the responsibilities of their co-workers and employers; together with the legal requirements for reporting and recording accidents.

This course is intended for all staff with responsibility for health and safety, and no prior knowledge is assumed or required.

Infection Control

Designed to meet the requirements of the Department of Health Guidelines on Control of Infection in Residential and Nursing Homes, other appropriate legislation and National Care Standards, this training course will provide participants with an overview of the key elements of infection control, an understanding of how infections might occur, and how good practice can reduce their likelihood and prevent the spread of infection.

This course is intended for all members of staff working in the healthcare setting who need to be aware of the issues surrounding infection control, and no prior knowledge is assumed or required.

They will also learn different ways of dealing with the issue that can be implemented for both themselves and those suffering loss or bereavement.

Medication Awareness Training

Designed to meet the requirements of the Care Quality Commission standards and National Care Standards, this training course will provide participants with an introduction to medications and the prescription service; an understanding of who supplies medicines and how; an understanding of how to safely store, administer and dispose of medicines; an understanding of quality control and good record keeping procedures; an understanding of accountability, responsibility and confidentiality; and an understanding of the roles of The Committee on the Safety of Medicine and The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

This course is intended for anyone who may need to administer medication as part of their job, and no prior knowledge is assumed or required.

Mental Capacity Act (2005) and Deprivation of Liberty

This training course will look at the historical context and provide a clear overview of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA). It will define capacity and what it means to the individual, and will provide an understanding of the laws and legislative guidelines, including the Care Quality Commission's expectations. It will also examine significant sections of the MCA and how these are enforced; the roles and responsibilities of those involved in capacity issues and making decisions; and the support of public bodies.

Skills For Care: Common Induction Training

Designed to assist in meeting the requirements of the Common Induction Training (CIT)**, this training course covers areas from each of the six standards, with the exception of the internal workplace training and induction requirements.

Further training is available separately to cover in more detail the following standards:

  • Fire Safety, First Aid
  • Infection Control
  • Medication and Health Care Procedures
  • Security

These are all certificated half-day or full-day courses suitable for a group of 4-12 employees.

**CIT has to be completed within the 12-week induction period, which must be provided for all new care staff.
